So, okay, maybe that sprinkle on my windshield doesn't count as a true downpour from this rain goddess, but I did deliver on the sweet double rainbow that arched over the city this afternoon. And I'm here until Saturday, so I still have time. In other news, I seem to have bought a house and gotten a job. So if the inspection on my property in NY comes back clean tomorrow (please, please, please, please), the moving van picks up my junk on July 28th, and we should arrive in this fair city around… Continue

Rain

The wife and I were in Albuquerque on Friday, trying to work out where we're going to live when we grow up and move to ABQ, looking into job prospects. You know how you can tell I was there? Because it was raining. It is always raining when I am in Albuquerque. Not to mention the tornadoes I caused when I flew through Denver. So, when I move, Albuquerque will have its own rain god. I keep telling people that I am moving for the better weather, but I have yet to actually experience it!

Just TOO Ready

I've read all the blogs, all the forums, everything. Every website or tour book that mentions Albuquerque, I've read. I've visited the city, gone to open houses, fallen in love with sopapillas, and figured out, finally, which way Juan Tabo runs. I've looked at all the neighborhoods everyone has warned us against (but where I like the houses), checked the crime stats, driven out there at night, and haven almost convinced myself that I'm an expert and the people who actually live in Albuquerque… Continue

At 11:57am on January 22nd, 2008, dick said…: fully understandable, our slowness and "backwardsness" used to be the reason people leave but, I guess I was in my twenties when the exodus of my friends happened. My whole social scene is based around the bar industry and its been more times than not that I knew more people working in the bar than patrons and I go through that annoyed thing also. My biggest problem is if I don't go out I don't see friends. If you do get homesick you can always go to Santa Fe, it seems like every high end boutique from NY or Paris has opened a satellite in SF, so you can go be ignored by snobs and pay 14.00 for a cocktail, here we're happy with a beer and a shot for 5.00 and it is unheard of to pay more than 5.00 for a cocktail (not really but it is relatively cheap to go out here). Living is amazingly cheap & easy which is why I think alot of our best talent goes unnoticed because its just too easy to kick back and not try that hard. for every Shins or Eric Mcfadden (the best) there is ten other great musicians who prefer to play the clubs every night and not try to be the next big thing.
not sure what your into, livingwise, but Nob Hill/ student ghetto & Ridgecrest (87106 & 87108) are the only self sustaining neighborhoods in the city (they are all connected) where you can actually live without a car and all the shopping you need is right there. I did some demographics a while back working on my last attempt at a restaurant and 87106 & 87108 has the highest concentration of artists in the state. A beatiful bungalow in Nob Hill will run about 225,000. to 300,00. on about 1500 sq ft. not the most expensive neighborhood but the one of the coolest. the creators of this website are from there and a good many of the members are from that area.

One thing I have found out about this place is it has a weird way of bringing people together. One instance- I had this girlfriend who was a super hot stripper and total party girl and I never should have been with her and have not dated party girls since her ( or have tried not to) and I had this friend who was a total trendy super cool too hip for you UNM student, well the UNM student was having a party and I brought my girlfriend thinking she would be totally bored with the crowd and when we got there the two of them started talking right away and, jealously intrigued, I butted into the conversation and found out that they had actually met for the first time two months earlier at an acid jazz bar (their words not mine) in Greenwich Village. Of course both were acting cool so they didnt want anybody to know that they werent from NY so they both found out they lived in ABQ that night.Second instance- I used to own a crepe stand that I operated downtown for the drunks (really, that is all that is downtown- don't believe the hype, I can tell you more about the hoods if you like just let me know your preferences). Albuquerque for the most part had never heard of an outdoor crepe stand so I was all the shit when I opened, no matter how much i tried telling the community that i was just as common as a hot dog stand in some cities in the world. but, anyway, I had a chance to meet the extensive international community in ABQ and one of the people I had met was a scientist from Sandia labs named Vladimir, who was Serbian. I told him that I had a friend on my soccer team who's wife was from Serbia and her name was Anna. He told me that he had actually just me Anna and they were from the same village in Serbia but had never met until they ran into each other here. Crazy, huh. Oh yeah, that stripper that I dated- after a soccer game, (I was on a coed team at the time) I asked a girl who was on the team, who was friends with her, if she had her about her, or seen her, or anything, and she said, " oh yeah, I didn't tell you I ran into her at LaGuardia, I was coming home and she was going to eastern Europe to teach English. and we talked than we went to our terminals." It only gets worse, once Albuquerque is in your blood it's there forever and you will forever run into people all over the world from Albuquerque
