Restoring the spirit

I went to Hobby Lobby today to price bead baking racks for my new oven - for polymer clay. I was hesitating as spending more money on yet another craft was sounding warning bells in my head. You'd know how I was feeling if you saw my art closet with added shelves and saw the boxes still unpacked in my garage (are we moving? can we sell the house?). Beads, brushes, paints, handmade paper - I have it all. Before I left California, someone gave me a pasta machine for my clay - you roll it out with… Continue

I knew I was in trouble...

I knew I was in trouble when I saw the message - "Please be patient; map may take awhile to load." I was over at the Albuquerque Arrest Map at the Albuquerque Journal - http://www.abqjournal.com/crime/crimemapmonthlydefault.htm - and I had selected a monthly view. I waited and waited - I really thought my computer had gone into spaced out mode when the map finally popped up. You can't see the street names for all the arre… Continue

And Parking too!

You can't get there from here - easily

Express Jet is canceling its route between Albuquerque and Sacramento in Sept. I loved taking Express Jet - 2 hours non-stop and I'm visiting with friends, attending festivals and enjoying the mild weather. It was my home for 25+ years and I miss it a lot. Express Jet flights were priced reasonably ($239 and under) and they still offered a free lunch - sandwich, snack, drink and dessert. Express Jet is not doing business anymore under its own name. I think it's flying under Delta or Continental.… Continue

I like what you have to say about using our knowledge to help others. It's important to do that.

Interestingly enough, my first semester teaching as a full-time tenure track professor in Washington DC, I had not one but TWO young widows with hearing loss and young children as students! When the first one came to me to ask for an extension on an assignment, and then explained why, I teared up even though it was 15 years after the fact for me. The second one gave me goosebumps when she came in.

Since then I have met four other young widows/moms students at my university - I remember the kindness of my professors when I was a fulltime student dealing with litigation and a toddler, and I am glad to finally be in a position where I can help others. (Though of course, as you say, it is not a club that anyone wants to belong to.)

I agree about smells - I can't ever smell creosote or new fallen rain on the desert without thinking of my late husband. And I STILL tense up and account for loved ones any time I see a police car parked on my street - the police came to my door late at night to notify me almost 19 years ago.

The other thing that I did not anticipate to be a trigger was movement - once in a while my son will do something exactly like his biological father, and is just catches me off guard. Bittersweet.

On another note, thanks for your kind words re: my blog. I have fun with it.

Be well,
BB

Your post about the family whose daughter was killed in an auto accident touched me, and then brought back memories for me as well. I didn't lose a child, but a husband - who left behind a 13 day old baby.

My thoughts are with you on the loss of your son. The pain never goes away entirely, does it? And those moments that catch one off guard are the ones that are toughest to get through...

Hi - thanks for the comment. I took the Motorcycle Safety Class last year in April, but it took us a year to my bike. God, how scared I was to get on the bike, even at the class. I had two instructors, one was really great. The other one had a bit of an ego. But I am so glad I took the class. Have you thought about taking the class again??

Yes 2600 meetings are open to anyone with a open mind. You probably have to be a bit geeky to have alot of fun, but tend to be as inclusive as possible.

the meets are always on the first friday of the month, usually at the UNM SUB, starting around 5:30-6pm

Hi Jan! I love beads! I've been collecting beads all my life, but got serious about it seven years ago. Do you do shows or sell anywhere? Keep putting pics up of your stuff! Welcome to DCF!
