State Fair - All Tingley about a Coliseum

STATE FAIR! The Biggest Show in New Mexico, is an undated, but recent, book dedicated to: "New Mexico's children and children at heart who have faithfully made the State Fair a part of their lives." I'm one of those. I've had some of the best and worst times of my life at… Continue

Shannon, Dan, James & Whiskey

In "Lonely are the Brave," a movie made from the book, "The Brave Cowboy", by Edward Abbey, Kirk Douglas rides his palomino, Whiskey, across the Albuquerque west mesa toward DukeCity, in Bernal County. It was filmed in 1961 and today the western horizon looks much the same. The ancient volcanoes, lava flow and City open space bound the western edge of the city. But this is changing. Developer SunCal hopes to build beyond the volcanoes.

Public Interest Not Served at SunCal Picnic

If campaigning determines development you can't really call it planned. It's a pet peeve of mine - when we blame failed plans more often than not it was a failure to plan entirely. This is because so much of development decision-making is handed to those who represent their own interests. Take development of Albuquerque's Westside. Please. New Mexico Independent notes that developer SunCal is supporting Deve… Continue

Marty, Marco and Mom

Mom always told me about the importance of a good reputation and that people judge you by your friends. She’d dish out the “lay down with dogs, wake up with fleas” speech and seemed too concerned with who we were hanging out with. Clearly New Mexico’s story by the feisty investigative reporter Eileen Welsome explores close ties between Albuquerque’s Mayor and the architect at the center of the Metro Court corruption scandal. Mom w… Continue

Who Killed Cricket Coogler?

At least six men are probable suspects according to Paula Moore, author of a new book about the murder: Cricket in the Web – the 1949 Unsolved Murder that Unraveled Politics in New Mexico. Ms. Moore was at Bookworks Thursday and signed my already dog-eared copy. Moore is former executive assistant to the New Mexico State University President and a long time resident of Dona Ana County. She was well spoken and patient with her audience – s… Continue

Coco, love your Tingley post. So do you know the Darnells? Went to school with Emily and like all my friends, had a crush on her brother Cliff.

Cadigan failed to get the votes needed to override Marty's veto on the TIDD bill. Surprised I haven't seen anybody comment on it. The trib covers it here

Cadigan has a great quote at the end... "What happened to capitalism?," Cadigan asked. "What happened to asking a developer to get the money from a bank instead of taxpayers?"

I found this great link to a recent study carried out by a County Commissioner in Chicago about the issue... in their case its called TIF's but its basically the same thing. You can view that here

Hey Coco... thought you'd find today's Journal article about Marty's ties to Suncal interesting...
