Profile

Where I Live:
Student Ghetto
About Me:
I'm a weird combo of skinhead, arts professional, and class war enthusiast.
Favorite Thing(s) About Albuquerque:
Food; views; space; my neighborhood; locals & newcomers that respect the locals
Relationship Status:
Married
What I'm Reading:
Just read Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve. It's young adult fiction, and thus was a real quickie. But it was pretty awesome, I have to say. Not meek, and highly imaginative. Actually a pretty great book! Fans of Mieville's The Scar will like this a lot. Thanks, Ray.

Read Three Cups of Tea a week or two ago. It was a bit much, a bit too uplifting for my taste. But a good story and one definitely worth reading if you're interested in some of the inner workings of small town Pakistan and Afghanistan, two breeding grounds for maniacs, thanks to American politics and Saudi money. I give Three Cups a mild recommendation. It wasn't about missionaries, which I was glad of.

In January and February I took in 5 books on Japanese history, and ultimately found myself confused and still lacking a good perspective.

I've also recently read up on Mormonism, Durruti & Ataturk. For Christmas I got books on Turkish history and China Mieville's most recent book.
What I'm Listening To:
David Bowie's 1990's albums, Against Me! And my usual, old school Oi! as well as newer bands like Anti Heros, Hard Skin, and Guttersnipe; Tossers & other Paddy Punk; the Men they Couldn't Hang, the disk Ted sent me. Stuff.

Bone Yard Poets – Etchings by Robert Spicher

My friend Bob Spicher is opening his first show here in Albuquerque tomorrow evening, August 1st, at New Grounds, a couple of blocks east of Carlisle on Central, 5-8pm. It runs through the month.

Bob's art is...err...well okay, about a year ago he showed me a new edition he was pulling. The image was twisted and difficult. I loved it. "Well, that's appalling, Bob," I told him. He got this heart-felt-look like I'd just given him a puppy, "Thank you," he replied. And me meant it. Bob tests the waters of what's socially appropriate, what's aesthetic, of what seems sane. Because Bob, himself, plays around with those boundaries in life. He's no flamboyant (tiresome?) young shock jock; Bob could easily be my dad..

I've been saving myself, waiting for his show, because I'm going to buy something, maybe two somethings. The work is great, and Bob is even better. And people often think we're related. Of course, Bob is bald from chemo, I'm bald because I'm a thug. But we also wear the same glasses. I take the assumption as a compliment.

"Thomas Kinkade is Weak," or "Why You Shouldn't Sell Giclee Prints of Your Work"

Unfortunately, someone somewhere decided that art was intended for a specific segment of the population. At least here in the United States. Other societies don't have this problem, and it really is a problem. I have no idea if the Jesse Helms's of the world convinced the majority of the population that art is None Of Their Business and has nothing to do with them, or if it was some uppity art scene somewhere sometime, who wanted to keep the help from attending the openings. Either way, t… Continue

A Little Advice: Don't Let It Get Away From You

Your art, that is. This is a "quick" post about what artists often consider the really boring and unnecessary part of making their art. But take it from me: it is oh so necessary, and you are shooting yourself in the foot if you don't take time to put on these little finishing touches. You know, the totally unnecessary stuff, like: -Signing your work -Titling your work -Dating your work (not romantically, unless...) -Storing your work Sign your work. It's yours, right? You made it, you… Continue

The Telephone Museum of New Mexico

My partner and I finally made it during open hours to the Telephone Museum of New Mexico. We had tried to go a couple of times before and always missed it by the thinnest of margins. They are only open MWF 10-2, so plan accordingly. The TMNM is a charming place, situated in the old telephone exchange building downtown, on the 4th St Mall between Central and Copper. It is a truly local and non-profit endeavor, staffed and manned ent… Continue

Getting Into a Gallery

Not all artists are interested in being represented by a gallery. But many are. How does one do that, though? Approaching a gallery in a professional way is the best start. It's not about hat-in-hand, sad sack earnestness. You have to understand that most galleries, especially here in Albuquerque, are very small businesses, run by a small handful of people (many are run by one person), and most don't make a zillion bucks doing it. If you want to make a bunch of money, being a gallery owner in… Continue

Corrales Interregnum

Hello Hello. We interrupt this regularly scheduled blog, because my life itself has been rather "interruptus" lately. I've quit my job at the gallery & begun a new one cataloging and archiving an artist's work, a project scheduled to run for at least 2 years. My new gig is deep in the heart of Corrales, and I live only a few blocks south of the University, so I have the distinct pleasure of driving to work. Mind you, I've lived within an easy bike ride of my employment for the past 10+ years… Continue

If knowledge is power, and power corrupts, is it stupid to be pure, or just ignorant?
