Hi Bonnie, thanks for the very interesting article on the Navajo Casino. I love this quote from one of the builders: "I won't let any skinwalkers, witchcraft, Godless people try to stop what we are doing," Yazzie said. And boy the Navajo Nation really deserves to make more money, maybe they can finally dig those 22 feet deep water wells for the 50% of households (out of roughly 30,000 on the Res) without water, which we calculated because most Navajo reside above a huge aquifer, the San Juan Basin. - Kaatje

Hi, I saw Dennis this morning at the store. He has not been around because his wife is very ill (it doesn't sound good, cancer in various places) and they have been busy with docs, tests etc. for the last 8 weeks.
Sad.

Thanks so much for the advice! I appreciate it. My coworker, John Fleck, offered to teach me some things, so I'm going to try that before going to the bike shop, but Divas night sounds interesting!

Hi again!

UNM is such a disaster for wheelchairs. There is one graduate student who has been waiting for 3 or 4 years for the Committee to approve a 300 dollar door adjustment so he can get in and out of his lab at the BMSB Building. They have a completely incompetent North Campus "Disability Coordinator" who knows nothing and does nothing for physically disabled students, only for learning disabilities.

There is a Parking and Planning Coordinator who send me threatening emails when I insisted of finding me a storage space for my electric disability scooter on North Campus. She also designed the new handicap parking spots near the new Domenici Center with the ramp to the building facing the other way so you have to practically go around the building. The nearest Handicap Parking to the BMSB Building is 620 feet away with badly maintained concrete (which is where I have fallen so often). There is no access or a parking pass for disabled students who do clinical rotations at UNMH where also, most handicap spots are taken by non-handicapped people.

Because of all the building around Surge, there are NO parking spots and as I mentioned before, the on-ramp has been turned into another money making rental private spot (1400/year). I even asked the coordinator if I could rent a parking spot and she said no. I spend 1.5 years getting to school at an ungodly hour and always tired because if not all handicap spots were taken, most by people who do NOT need it.

f you know of anyone if power who can do something more, please let me know.

Gracias, Kaatje

Another lengthy comment from me Bonnie! I'm a UNM student in a manual Ti-Lite and have fallen out of my chair 3 times due to maintenance problems on the North Campus, and I am not surprised about this turn of events.

The new Domenici Center has such steep inclines that it is often hard to take in a manual, the "accessible" bath rooms do not have an electric door (but feature $100,000 dollars of artwork, this is called Value Engineering) and the only ramp in front of the Surge building to get from the main road on the curb has been turned into a N-74 parking spot for rent..

Also, all the "wheelchair only" Handicap Parking spots are always taken by young students who are using their dead grandma's placard, and security or parking will not enforce the law. Eh..Murderball (the awesome documentary), anyone?

Hi Bonnie, just read my comments and realized I hadn't replied yet to your question regarding the Lowlands (that means the Netherlands literally translated in English). Yes. Born and raised, and now a very happy American citizen with two passports. My better half is from Canada (well, raised there), and my sister-in-law is Moroccan, she and my brother live in the Netherlands. We are the only ones in the US, everyone else is in Canada, Trinidad, and Holland. But it is a luxury to be able to choose between US, Canada and Holland as residences. Of course, NM being the Land of Entrapment we're not going anywhere soon. Your page says you work with kids, what do you do? The peds rotation today was probably the worst in terms of coping with what I see and experience. One abused child, one with trench mouth, two little kids in hand cuffs needing medical clearance for juvy, one without vaccinations. I even stopped reading "Gulag", the only non-medical book I brought with me. Oh, and then all the poor dogs that are chained up. "Reservation Blues Part Three" talks about that. No kidding, I have the reservation blues and still love this place and this hospital and all the people, co-workers, patients, because, what else can you do?

Not a grant, as a UNM PA student this is just part of my clinical training. Pediatrics right now, and after my surgery rotation at UNMH I will go back the end of May for Women's Health. I jumped on the opportunity to go to this hospital in Crownpoint, and I also love Gallup!

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks for the comment you left on my blog. Yes, this is an amazing opportunity and I'm enjoying this everyday. Right now I'm doing peds, as well as women's health in another five weeks at the same Navajo hospital. Although I am applying to jobs in geriatric psychiatry, it is tempting to stay on here after my graduation and live here part of the week (if they will have me). It is hard to put into words what this is like unless you know it personally. One thirds of my patients do not have running water or electricity, even if they do not live far from the hospital, and this is something I will address in subsequent blogs. And the kindness of those patients as well as the personnel, from cleaning staff to the docs is refreshing. Have a great day,

Kaatje

Thanks Bonnie. I do appreciate your support. I knew I was going to take a lot of heat for posting this.

Any news out there?
