Sad.
UNM is such a disaster for wheelchairs. There is one graduate student who has been waiting for 3 or 4 years for the Committee to approve a 300 dollar door adjustment so he can get in and out of his lab at the BMSB Building. They have a completely incompetent North Campus "Disability Coordinator" who knows nothing and does nothing for physically disabled students, only for learning disabilities.
There is a Parking and Planning Coordinator who send me threatening emails when I insisted of finding me a storage space for my electric disability scooter on North Campus. She also designed the new handicap parking spots near the new Domenici Center with the ramp to the building facing the other way so you have to practically go around the building. The nearest Handicap Parking to the BMSB Building is 620 feet away with badly maintained concrete (which is where I have fallen so often). There is no access or a parking pass for disabled students who do clinical rotations at UNMH where also, most handicap spots are taken by non-handicapped people.
Because of all the building around Surge, there are NO parking spots and as I mentioned before, the on-ramp has been turned into another money making rental private spot (1400/year). I even asked the coordinator if I could rent a parking spot and she said no. I spend 1.5 years getting to school at an ungodly hour and always tired because if not all handicap spots were taken, most by people who do NOT need it.
f you know of anyone if power who can do something more, please let me know.
Gracias, Kaatje
The new Domenici Center has such steep inclines that it is often hard to take in a manual, the "accessible" bath rooms do not have an electric door (but feature $100,000 dollars of artwork, this is called Value Engineering) and the only ramp in front of the Surge building to get from the main road on the curb has been turned into a N-74 parking spot for rent..
Also, all the "wheelchair only" Handicap Parking spots are always taken by young students who are using their dead grandma's placard, and security or parking will not enforce the law. Eh..Murderball (the awesome documentary), anyone?
Thanks for the comment you left on my blog. Yes, this is an amazing opportunity and I'm enjoying this everyday. Right now I'm doing peds, as well as women's health in another five weeks at the same Navajo hospital. Although I am applying to jobs in geriatric psychiatry, it is tempting to stay on here after my graduation and live here part of the week (if they will have me). It is hard to put into words what this is like unless you know it personally. One thirds of my patients do not have running water or electricity, even if they do not live far from the hospital, and this is something I will address in subsequent blogs. And the kindness of those patients as well as the personnel, from cleaning staff to the docs is refreshing. Have a great day,
Kaatje
