"seeing all time as you might see a stretch of the rocky mountains"

I was going to write a post that was all hyperlinks, but I think that I’ll save that up for a few weeks, so that I can call it “October Surprise”. In any case, I believe that I am beginning to belie… Continue

A few of my favorite (burque) things

For reasons that will remain my own I wanted to spend at least part of this lovely day, early in September on my own. Leaving the house at the uncharacteristic hour of nine, I began my morning with breakfast at the Chocolate Bakery and Café’. I did not take a photograph at the ca… Continue

Otakumex

The new Albuquerque anime convention "Otakumex" opens today in Embassy Suites. I'm thinking if I should go. Their websive (http://www.otakumex.com/) bears the tell-tale marks of disorganization (e.g. no panel schedule), which drive me away. Heck it does not even say when the registration is open. But what's a man to do. I don't want to drive to LA for AX. I suppose I may check it out tomorrow, see what a small-town con is like. Maybe it's fuzzy and homely, who knows. UPDATE: I was wrong about t… Continue

bicycle accident

I got into another bicycle accident, 4 days from the 2 year anniversary of my last (Sept. 9), this morning. My body seems uninjured save for some soreness. The doc says I'm ok. My bike is not doing so well. I was traveling West on Dr. M.L.K. Jr. Blvd. at only 25 MPH (because just last week I converted to single speed, else I would have been doing 35) when a woman in a compact/mid-size car turned left into me. The sun may be responsible for poor visibility on her end. I slid across the passenger… Continue

"Sandia" Means "Watermelon"! Watermelon Margaritas Mean Fall Fun!

watermelon margarita recipe

It's said that it's a long, long time between May and December, but the days grow short when you reach September. Hey! It's SEPTEMBER! It's time to enjoy those ripe, red, watermelons in a big End of Summer Fling! Enjoy that sunset glow with the red… Continue

Am I the only one that thinks "Burque" is more than just a little hokey?

What is with this obsession with the name make-over of converting Albuquerque into 'Burque"? Is it an attempt to make it more hip? With it? Is Albuquerque too old, too stogy or just not cool? I've heard "Burque" described as the insecure middle-school bully making up a threatening nickname for himself. Albuquerque is a challenge to spell and it takes up a lot of space...but hey, it's the name of the city and it is unique. What's with the need to change it and shorten it so it looks like a pathe… Continue

The 'Burque/'Bama Connection

My niece Juanita, a UNM student, was selected to introduce Michelle Obama at her rally yesterday at the UNM SUB Ballroom. What an incredible experience for her! She was amongst some of New Mexico's Democratic heavy hitters. Lt. Governor Diane Denish, introduced my niece and talked about all of her academic achievements a… Continue

My Personal State Fair Survival Guide

There's a reason I don't go to very many first run movies and when I do, I go to the matinee. There is no matinee at the state fair. With a $9 adult admission price, I have to choose my days carefully. Right now, the first ever Bluegrass Day on opening Friday looks pretty cool. Local he… Continue
