New Orleansy Venues?

We moved here from New Orleans in November... sigh... any place to see good music where people are laid back?

What kind of music?

Blues/funk. But also someplace truly low key and hip... like the Maple Leaf. No pretend hip places like Zinc or Copper Lounge

Still trying to come to grips with the fact that the Meters (or members of the Meters) don't play on a regular basis.

There's nothing like the Maple Leaf here. Maybe not anywhere... Certainly not gonna see George Porter Jr. walk in. If you don't care for Zinc, then you might not like Scalo, Savoy or Seasons, which also feature live jazz and blues on various nights. St.Claire Winery has music many nights, jazz & blues mostly, and is relaxed, but its nowhere near as hip as someplace like the Maple Leaf. Q Bar is poser central. Ever since Club Rhythym & Blues closed a couple of years age its been hard for jazz & blues in this town.

Wahh. Thanks. We flew in Walter Wolfman Washington and the Roadmasters for our wedding in the North Valley in 2004. Lots of stamped out joints out in the backyard when they left. Here's my email if you ever hear of anything great. jenzoe@aol.com.

I think your best bet for the kind of vibe you describe is WilLee's Blues Bar in Santa Fe. Jeff

Great! Thank you!

Yeah, you should have been there last night when the ABC were playing ;^) Mike Chavez from the HooDoos sat in for a couple of tunes, and a couple of weeks ago Mr Sipe himself did us the honor. Its a good club, and this time of year the patio out back is real nice.

I moved to NM from Austin in 1991, so I understand the pain of live-music withdrawal. There's a burgeoning community of former NOLA folks in Santa Fe, many musicians and some former Maple Leaf regulars. Among them are my daughter and family, who resettled in SF after losing all to Katrina. Her husband is drummer "Alabama Dave," who played (pre-Katrina) with Chubby Carrier, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, and John Lisi's Delta Funk. Dave's new band is The GumboProject, and their schedule is here: http://www.myspace.com/gumboproject. Also check out MudFoot Music, my daughter's booking agency, which has a mission of bringing New Orleans music to the mountain southwest. : http://www.myspace.com/mudfootmusic. Good luck in your quest for hip laidback-ness.

Thank you. You just made my day. I will check out the website! That is exciting! We lived in the Irish Channel and got very lucky (though I was 8 months pregnant when we evacuated!)
