Weekend Get-aways to someplace cooler than burque

Other than Cloudcroft and Jemez Springs (I've done them to death) anyone have some good ideas of nearby (3-4 hours of driving time or less) places to visit to get out of the heat? I am more the B&B and remote cabin type rather than having any desire to be someplace as corporate as Angel Fire. Not rich but not a cheepo ether . . . I like the $125 a night range of lodging.

JeSais - Albuquerque summer weather is VERY pleasant compared to DC summer humidity. Summer temps are hotter than San Diego (I spent a lot of time in PB, OB, Point Loma and Claremont Mesa as a child) but much lower humidity.

Something to keep in mind once you start looking for a home - living in an older home with double adobe walls is quite comfortable and you may not need to cool it much. We don't even bother turning on the cooler in our place until it hits 96 or so - most of the time it stays about 77 inside if we keep the windows closed.

Lots of beatuiful places in northern NM and southern Colorado all along the border from Four Corners to Raton. Pull out a map and pick a place.

If you want cool and beautiful I like Silverton, CO above Durango. Very nice!

How about Los Alamos? You could spend the day at Bandelier National Monument. It's pleasant in Frijoles Canyon; you could picnic or camp there. The Wednesday nightwalk is awesome, too.

Hiking high country between Durango and Silverton.

I really like TorC. Stay at the Firewater, soak in the springs, kick it at Elephant Butte. Cute little crazy town. Make sure to drop by Black Cat Books.

Durango isnt to shabby either. I had the best eggs benedict of my life there at a french restaurant. yum.

There are cabins near La Cueva in the Jemez that are available (sorry, it was 7 years ago, I don't remember the name, and they may have changed hands by now. Try Google) and are supposed to be pretty nice, but they're relatively close to the state road. There's not much to La Cueva itself--filling station and a small restaurant. But then maybe that's what you want.

Are we complaining about the heat already? It just barely arrived, and it's not even that bad yet. I enjoy the warmth, at least well into June (especially after the weird spring we had this year). The cooling off at night makes it very bearable. I still haven't readied the old swamp cooler, but this weekend I will.

I agree with the vote for Durango, when I do start to tire of the heat it is a welcome change of pace/scenery/temperature. And remember, for quicker relief just for the day the Sandias are perfect. There can be a world of difference at 10,000 feet!

perhaps they are trying to look for ideas for later on?

Yep- we try to book things a month in advance if possible. The downside of that is whenever the weekend is upon us, some cool event is happening in Albuquerque that we want to go to.
