Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

offend 2 million people in a couple of paragraphs. Sorry.

In the course of a 90 mile trip a person should be able to come up with a diplomatic way to articulate ones feelings.
Not so
.
I moved to New Mexico in September of 2007 from the Seattle area. Seattle no better or worse than most other west coast towns (except Portland it’s the best). Thus I am an outsider and opinions are like a$$ never mind you get the pic.

I digress. I have had a tough time adjusting to “New Mexican cuisine”. I try to follow the "when in Rome" philosophy, but gee wiz.
In the days before the trailer houses were pulled into New Mexico It must have been one spectacular place.
I have tried any number of recommended restaurants from Albuquerque to San Antonio and north to Taos. Some fine most awful. In an attempt to find a good burger I have eaten more ground beef than I care to admit. Today I made the 180 mile round trip to San Antonio. I do not know what East or West coast imbecile decided that if you go to some dark tiny hole in the wall, take a trailer trash hamburger and dump some green chili on it, WOW you have the seventh best hamburger in America. Trailer trash hamburger……some cheap ass buns (usually rather small), a meat patty, one too small piece of cheap american cheese, piece of onion, some disgustingly cheap pickles (neon green chemical flavor), and a tomato slice all center stage on a Styrofoam plate devoid of any accompaniments.

Somewhere around 1970 all attempts at evolving a New Mexico cuisine ceased. Due to this if you inquire as to New Mexican food you will be met with Frito pie (hum 1960s five and dime worker food) um ok. Indian fry tacos
Um yea right. Im sure the local native americans sat around at dinner trying to come up with a great carnival food. You can almost picture the excitement when in the middle of the New Mexican desert they whipped out the cheap a$$ ground beef, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and a little shredded cheddar cheese. But wait lets not forget the real reason we are proud of New Mexican cuisine. Yes that’s right folks, what you’ve all been salivating for The GREEN CHILE. It speaks for its self .

I find myself eating at one or two restaurants and not venturing to try new ones. I have been to several recommended places, some I have eaten at others I have just left after browsing the menu.

This reminds me of a trip I took to Texas a few years ago. I went into a deli to get a sandwich. I asked what kind of bread they offered. The response. “We got white bread and hotdog buns”. Well hell I sure miss Texas.

Maybe I seem a little testy. Maybe I am. Are there any other transplants that have had these feelings and brave enough to admit it?

PS I really dont want to offend anyone. Please dont take this rant too serious.

I'm just saying, dude...eating some cheeseburgers, some frybread, and a frito pie and then launching into pronouncements about "New Mexican cuisine" doesn't exactly make you sound like you know what you're talking about.
I also like Blake's.
Lindy's on Central has a good green chile cheese burger and I would agree that Taqueria Mexico on lomas is yummy.
Also, the Route 66 cafe ?, the place near old town, not UNM has great frito pie, the beef is cooked when you order.
Of course you can also eat the good Vietnamese places too.
For an amazing burger hit "Bobcat Bite" in Santa Fe. Yum!

Oh to go to a new town and criticize the people that live there and what they eat is so easy. Maybe if you ate chile and walked around with a chile buzz all day you wouldn't be so critical.

Apparently the whole "Wimpy's" name was lost on you.
well, i have been here for a little over a year and there has not been on plate of food that i have ordered that just blew my mind. the way everyone hyped up "new mexican" cuisine, one would expect some kind of taste bud orgasam! sadly, i have never had one of them.
no, the wimpy's name wasn't lost on me....its just wimpy, that's all, it's a very fitting name.
I agree with the comment that there is surely an abundance of crap out there and many of the suggestions these people have made are of no help. But there are many of us foodies in these parts and we do know and understand good food without having been transplanted from somewhere else. In addition to the abundance of crap there is also plenty of very good food here as well.

You're experience is limited, seriously, there really is good food here, equal to the quality and taste of Relish. As someone noted, a very good hamburger can be indeed had at the Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe, and an interesting hamburger can be had at the Standard Diner. To the person who recommended Taqueria Mexico on Lomas, it's very good authentic "mexican" food. Perhaps you will rant about how small the place is, but it's very good. If you really don't like it, then there's nothing anyone can do. As for "New Mexican," try some place that keeps it simple like El Patio.

I have spent a great deal of time in Seattle and yes, indeed there is good food there, but there is bad as well, I've had many an unsatisfying meal there. Finding good food anywhere is a matter of trial and error.
BTW....what happened to my original reply, i believe it was the one that adelita replied to.....this isn't one of those "shiny, happy comments only" forums is it?
Here is the site moderation policy:

really, i guess i thought that this site was about sharing opinions....am i only allowed to express myself with "nice" opinions? if we could all be lucky enough to only think "nice" thoughts.....
what a small-minded site.
I read it... not sure it should've been deleted but it did have a "you burque folk wouldn't know good food if it hit you on top of your sombrero's" feel to it.

I don't think NM food really needs to be defended as people the world over rave about it (they all can't be non-cultured locals right) and if you can't find a decent NM dish in Abq well then frankly you got problems... get out more, and if you don't like it psst... don't eat it. Go to Scalo and pretend you're somewhere else.
Don't get me wrong, I love this place; and yes, sometimes the quality of food leaves a whole lot to be desired (and I'm originally from a place where boiled meat and potatoes is considered haute cuisine!). BUT too much chile of any type just disguises bad meat -- that's a cultural anthropological fact!

Can't miss meals? Try the City Treats Cafe at the ABQ Museum in Old Town, Monica's El Portal on Rio Grande, Old Town, Yanni's on Nob Hill, Season's in Old Town, and of course, Blake's Lottaburger.

Cheers!
Here's my last comment on all this. I think that people responding were sincerely trying to give you great ideas for places to eat. And in your title you say you don't want to offend anyone, yet that is what you are doing. Good honest conversation is one thing. But to generalize an entire community's eating habits is just naive to me.

Hope you find something good in all this, including a good meal. Don't want to offend you though...maybe I'm just being testy too.
