Does anyone have any suggestions on how to spruce up a tired old wood floor?

This is a rental, so I dont want anything expensive or time consuming. In the past I have used some kind of heavy duty industrial strength wax, but that does not last long.
Maybe a different wax? Not paste wax. Something I can mop on or roll on?
Would thinned down, water based poly work? They look so bad

Dolores, are you floors sealed? If so, wax might not be the right option and may dull your floors. Hard to know without seeing them but your landlord might be able to tell you.

Good luck!

My landlord, wont do jack! This is for my own enjoyment. I am sure they were sealed many moons ago, but not much there any longer. The wax looks really nice, and if I did not have such an active household and 2 large dogs, it would be ideal, and last a decent amount of time. Its easy, and cheap, maybe I will just go with it again, and resign myself to keeping it up.....yuck

I recommend using the "Maintex" brand stripper and sealant. The stripper is an Industrial stipper and will remove any existing coating, such as wax. Then the sealant can be applied using one of those sponge mop. The key to making sure there isn't any damage to the wood, don't use too much water on the mop/sponge. In other words, wring our excess water before applying stripper and sealant. We have a 15" x 20" room with brick floors. My husband dompleted the task one Saturday. That was a year ago and the floor still look good. Good luck!

You can use the same stripper/sealant on a wood floor as you would a brick floor?

I'm in the exact same boat Dolores. I have two dogs, a partner and wood floors through out our entire rented apartment. I've asked both the landlord and the maintenance person and they won't do jack until we move out (I wonder if we have the same landlord LOL). In any case I'll be watching this thread with great interest.

Right now Murphy's oil soap once a week is probably as little if any helpful maintenance I can do and the floors have lost their shiney coating. They are definitely not sealed so I need to know what I can do before the floors actually get damaged.

I found an amazingly wonderful finish/wax for tired wood floors. Its called Excellence by Customs Solutions. It is easy, just mop on, crappy old floors just come alive. Get in touch with me if you want me to look up where I purchased, cant remember, but will be glad to look it up

Don't use boiled linseed oil, you may burn down your neighbor's house.

These guys have always done a first rate job for me: http://www.kcwoodfloors.com

Short of paying for a re-finish, try carpet...
