For what its worth the Friends of the Albuquerque Tribune are holding a meeting tomorrow night at 7pm at room 2405 at the University of New Mexico Law School. They propose to offer a formal bid to purchase the paper and run it as a "staffer and subscriber cooperative".

Tribune supporters plan formal offer to buy paper

This could be a real opportunity

I can remember reading the Albuquerque Tribune as a youth, and especially recall the historical authority of Howard Bryan's columns, among the many excellent writers who have been published therein. Having said that though, and been rightly sentimental about it, I believe that print media is quickly becoming obsolete. For some, it's still fashionable, but the relevance it once commanded has been transferred to other, electronic realms.

Goodbye my favorite Albuquerque daily paper. Even though you have been a shell of what you once were these past couple of months, you still have been the best paper in town.

The loss of this voice in civic discussion is tragic. I am disheartened that a business model wasn't found to sustain both papers in our community.

From Gene Grant to Mike Tumolillo to V.B. Price to Jim Montalbano and surely others I've missed, some of best community builders in Albuquerque found fertile ground at the Tribune.

Thanks to them, and to all the underpaid, over-worked journalists who continue to give life through words to our experience in the Duke City.

Wait, I forgot to ask -- Does anyone know what will happen to their website and its stores of valuable information about our community? Surely, someone will keep the archives online....

Chantal: I'm working to find that out today.

OK, an update of sorts. Scripps says the Web site will stay online for an undetermined amount of time -- minus any new updates, naturally.

The website will stay up until the end of March.

You're kidding me. What a bummer to lose all that Albuquerque content on the web.

To pay for server space and hosting of their archives can't be more than $100/mo. Just shut down comments and any other security loopholes and keep it online. Somebody, please.
