It’s wedding season – dresses are being altered, flowers are being ordered, and bands are being booked. Some old traditions will be observed and some new traditions will be started. I was married for eight years and much like my marriage, my non-traditional wedding was short an…

Being Hispanic but not Catholic always brings a confused look when I say that I was raised Presbyterian. But being a New Mexican means that certain traditions transcend religion. We always make Torta de Huevo for Easter. It is a dish that is traditionally made for Lent, but we eat it i…

My family was never into wrestling. My dad was a hardcore basketball fan and my mom thought wrestling was silly. What’s strange is that I was connected to wrestling without ever knowing it. Bear with me while I unfold this story. For those of us that grew up in the…

I’m a band parent. My daughter is in the Jazz Band at Taft Middle School. It's not a required class or an elective. It's a volunteer band and she's in it because she loves music. This means that I have to have her at school for band practice at 7:20 every morning b…

The year 2003 was a rough one for me and my family. My father passed away in July of that summer. My uncle died a month later and then my aunt died two months after that. There were times I would go to work in a weird fog and not be able to shake it. I worked in the Old Town area and one of the only ways of coping with it…

So when was the last time you had a serious make out session? I mean seriously sucking face like a teenager?! And where were your favorite make out spots as a youngster? Many of us native 'Burquenos know that some of the best places are gone, but the memories linger on. On this eve of Valentines Day, it seems appropriate to rem…

Well, it was bound to happen. Between working lots of extra hours at my new job and then getting very sick, I don't have a post! Although I have many stories waiting to be written, they all require research that I haven't gotten to yet.
So to make up for not having a pos…

I consider my mother my fashion icon. She always looks fabulous and considering she is almost 80 years old, she's still hot stuff!
Shopping was more of a sport for my mother than a task. And interestingly enough, the 70's seemed to be her fashion dec…

There used to be great theaters to see movies in 'Burque. Madstone was a big loss. But what about all those theaters of my youth? When I was a kid, going to the movies meant buttered popcorn, Jordan Almonds and a movie my f…

After graduating college I was sure I could make a living off my art. It didn't quite work out that way. I ended up working at a department store in Coronado for a while. On one particular day, as I was marking down some delicate undergarments, a cute old woman in…

Sometimes it takes having dinner with a friend to remind you of something so amazing it's hard to believe you could ever forget. I don't particularly like TVs in restaurants, but in this particular restaurant, on this particular night, my friend looked up and made a comment about what was on the screen. The fact that a women…

There is no denying it. There are pictures to prove it. Our first Christmas in our new house in the North Valley in 1966, my mom put up a flocked Christmas tree with coordinating green and blue glass balls.
I remember going to Rowland's Nursery on…

It sounds like you may be a Burque native, maybe even attended St. Mary or St. Pius. I'm researching a cheer that was sometimes employed by cheerleaders at Catholic Schools (in good fun) against opponents. It was used in tournament championship games, let's say AHS v. St. Mary and it went something like this: Hail Mary, Full of Grace, Grant the Bulldogs Second Place!,
a reference of course to beating the Bulldogs and gaining first for themselves. Any chance you heard such a thing in high school or others along the same line?
