Burque Babes and Bullies
~ A pit bull benefit calendar

While huge numbers of Pit Bulls in this country are cherished family pets, many not so fortunate suffer the consequences of neglect, fighting rings, and a never ending bad rap. The ladies of Burque Babes and Bullies are standing up for the pit bull’s by shining a new light on the loving and loyal breed. We are doing so by creating a calendar (to be released in November 2008), volunteering at Albuquerque’s Animal Care Centers, and raising money at local events put on by B.B.B. All proceeds will be donated to Albuquerque’s only pit bull program RAAP– Responsibly Adopting Albuquerque’s Pit Bulls – a non-profit animal welfare organization.

In 2006, RAAP was formed, specifically to educate the public about this magnificent but much-maligned breed and to place as many of them as possible into loving, responsible homes. As you may not know, Albuquerque’s Animal Care Centers take in more pit bulls than any other type of dog. Nearly 25% of all the dogs impounded at both our city shelters are pit bulls and pit mixes. The vast majority of these are euthanized.

It is the mission of the Burque Babes and Bullies and RAAP to dispel the hysteria and correct the misconceptions about bull breeds via outreach and information, community events, and training( puppy and adult socialization classes). Any, and all contributions for the upcoming calendar can help us achieve this goal, and not only give the adoptable pit bulls a new lease on life, but prevent them from terrible situations in the first place.

If you are interested in making a contribution, we are offering advertisement space in the calendar as follows:

All contributions under $100 will be mentioned in a thank you section.
All contributions ranging from $100 to $200 will receive a 1 day advertisement for a selected month, and will need to provide us with a logo/ad.
All contributions of $250 or more will receive a full size advertisement located at the bottom of an appointed month. Again, we will need you to provide the advertisement.
Contributions are not tax deductible.

Please contact Kassie Brown for more information, or to contribute to the calendar.

This is Emma. We found her in our yard in the east mountains (where lots of people like to dump their dogs). She either pushed her way through the fence (she was skinny enough) or someone was at least smart enough to put her in a fenced yardw ith no other dogs. She had just had a little and the vet said she had many many pregnancies. She's obviously a mix, but starvation does a lot to change your composition. She was scared and searching for her pups. She even carried a sneaker around for a while pretending she had found one. (now I'm almost crying and it's been 3 years!) She's the love of my life. She was growly and scared of everything including stairs and her own reflection (but not cats). Now she loves all people (a little afraid of men) and causious of other dogs. She has a little trouble getting her temper under control if she looses it with our other dog (a shepard mix) but she would lay down her life for us. BTW, we call her a "pincher mix" because bully breeds are illegal in Tijeras.

KaB, what's up? If you have time, post some pics of available pitts.

I adopted a Pit/Greyhound mix two years ago, and he has become a precious member of the family. He was born on the streets and lived there for two years, so it took a lot of work to get him to learn some manners. He has always been great with people and loves to cuddle. He is a bit aggressive towards other dogs, but he and my German Shepherd are the best of friends (even after they "argue"). I would never give him up. :)

great stories about just how great this breed is! you can see in my picture that I have two "vicious breeds" - one of which is a pit mix - she is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had and she has every right to hate humans. she was rescued by PACA as a bait dog and had spent two years out on the navajo reservation not allowing anyone near her...now all she wants to do is share her love. I have watched little prissy purse breeds start more fights than any large breed, and it brakes my heart to see how people (even trained rescuers) react to big dogs.

Flaca, that is a crazy story and KaB, just keep talking and doing for your and others dogs. I am always a hair away from adopting one, i've no business adding another to the family, heck, i live up in the north valley and the other day i pulled into my driveway, got out of the truck to open the gate and i see this real nice pit come trotting around the corner directly at me, so i step aside and open the truck door, i live right on 4th street and didn't want the dog to run into traffic, he jumps into the truck, i had to scoot him over from the drivers seat, i jump in, then he jumps into my lap like i'm his long lost owner, he was going off, it was too funny, thinking, i'm keeping this dog, but i recognized him from the neighborhood and immediately returned him and made a couple of new friends in the neighborhood, once again we see the horriffic pit bringing people together. i offered my assistance for training and went on my way.

That is sooo awsome! I hate when people give us dirty looks on walks, and pull their children away from my bully's wagging tail.. It's very intimidating. ; )
