Book Club

A friend involved me in a book club once, and I was TERRIBLE at it. But I still like the idea. Proposed: List and link the really great books you're reading, plus related other books, articles, music, film, and then we can discuss.

Local booksellers

Here's a reasonably good list of locally-owned bookstores.

I have been working my way down Sophie's book list. Many of these books I read along time ago but haven't revisited them. I'd be interested in recommendations of what book to go for next.

I've read:
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay (I enjoyed this much more than the Yiddish Policeman's nion)

Bel Canto (I really enjoyed this one and had not heard of it before this list)

Death Comes for the Archbishop (Obviously fantastic perspective on the pueblos of New Mexico and how people have been fighting over this land for a long time)

Girl Named Zippy

God's Perfect Child (I was raised as a Christian Scientist so this was particularly poignant for me)

Me Talk Pretty One Day

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (My husband and I now regularly greet each other with "I see you [insert name here]")

A Prayer for Owen Meany

The Shadow of the Wind (I hadn't gotten lost in another world like this for quite a while. Loved loved loved it)

One Hundred Years of Solitude (I actually only enjoyed parts of this book)

Time Traveler's Wife (I dream of cutting the book up and putting it back together in chronological order)

The Dark Trilogy - pretty ok

I look forward to revisiting from my past:
Stranger in a Strange Land
Fahrenheit 451
1984
Another Roadside Attraction (I enjoyed the recent Invalids from Hot Climates, or a name something like that - I'm a total Tom Robbins fan even if he does go on and on and on).

Brave New World
Catcher in the Rye
Fear of Flying Like Water for Chocolate

How's everybody else doing with this list?
